In 2014 Kevin Spacey Foundation funded a summer New Song Forum Theatre Camp. Twelve New Song students took part in a week-long creative intensive with renowned Baltimore/DC artists, Wendel Patrick, Javier Starks, Slangston Hughs and our own Mr. Vincent aka Grey Matter. The original piece titled, “A West Side Story: Through the Eyes of a Sandtown Child” was created by the students using spoken word, beatboxing, dance and music to tell the stories of Sandtown. Forum Theatre’s intent is to inspire community dialogue and our performance produced a reflective conversation with community members facilitated by New Song Ministry’s Joel Brown and Antoine Bennett.
We would like to continue this tradition. Providing safe spaces for young people to express their emotions and develop their ability to find resilience, leadership and service; by using the Arts to transform our reality into the desired alternative.
