History Through Dance

IMG_2920[1]The question, “What does it mean to be African American” is at the center of student inquiry this year as a part of our investigation of culture through dance.┬áIn response to this query, seventh grade students responded with savvy details about ancestry and color, as well as with grim realities like “jail” (see top right). Through the study of African American indigenous arts including Lindy Hop, Locking, Breaking, Baltimore Club, and Vernacular Jazz, New Song Learning Center broadens students’ imaginations about themselves to include the ofttimes obscured successes of history. Through the creative processes of improvisation and performance, students experience the positive impact they can have on the present and on their own futures.
